Obama's plan for free college
In Obama's latest State of the Union address, he announced an idea for free community college. It's a strong idea to help restore America's middle class and help the youth who are struggling to pay for college succeed. This could be one of the greatest plan's for today's youth who are going off to college and can barely afford college. There are a lot of young twenty year olds out there who are struggling to go to school and work to be able to support their education, some can't even afford college so they end up just working a job that barely pays enough for them to get by. And in fact, according to an article on Thedailybeast.com, "In Tennessee, an astonishing 90 percent of high school seniors are enrolling in the state version (of college)." This could help those who aren't sure if they can afford an education get up off their feet and a start to their life and education. This can also benefit single parents for any adults who want to get a better education or an education at all to help better their life and family. Not all adults who want to go back to school can afford it because their job can't support it which would be the whole reason for them going back to school. That means they are left in an endless rut that they cannot get out of unless they get a better education and this plan would be perfect for the millions of struggling adults and young adults out there. The fact that they have to maintain at certain GPA is a great idea too. It makes sure that no one who doesn't really want to be there isn't and makes sure that this tool is being used for the right reasons. And according to a Georgetown University study, by the year 2020 two thirds of all jobs will require at least some post secondary training, which few employers are willing to provide. Sure there could be some faults and it probably will never happen, but it seems like a good idea and there is always a possibility.

I agree that Obama's idea for free community college for all is a good idea because it would help out so many young people, but to me it sounds like a fantasy idea. He hasn't really gone into where the extra money for these community institutions would come from or how/when his plan will happen. Plus the Republicans would be completely shoot down his plan if it means taxing the wealthy more. And if everyone goes to a two year college, having a degree won't mean anything. And what happens when the classes become over crowded because its free and everyone can get in? What will the education quality be like if its a free college that everyone can get into. I also believe that if this plan was to happen the GPA should be raised to a slightly higher level because right now I think its to low and easy to achieve. I think more research should be done on this topic and maybe it will work out for some people.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Alex's comment, although a very satisfying idea this is quite unrealistic. To get money to fund those who want to go to college for free would certainly mean high taxes, prices of goods going up, and many more ridiculous actions to try and suck the money out of everyone's pocket. It would take too much to try and send kids off to college, maybe those who don't even deserve to go to the college. For instance if a student who is in the bottom of their graduating class doesn't want to go to college, but parents are making him/her because it will benefit them, and plus it's free, that person is taking up a seat where someone in their top 25% of the graduating class should be but couldn't because all the seats where full. This hinders that person that wants to be there from getting an education where they want. I think I would also just be too hectic and complicated to even start and get running in the first place.
