1. Chronic Illness
Most people have a stereotype in their head of what the poor look like. They have raggedy clothes and are probably drug addicts. But usually, the poor eat just as healthy as we do but don't exercise as much and have a weaker immune system. Being poor actually increases your risk for getting very sick.
2. Early Death
Being poor takes 5 years off of your life which doesn't sound horrible but the life expectancies in the South for a poor male is 65 years.
3. Low Social Mobility
In this day and age in the U.S., if you are born poor, you are likely to stay poor and it is hard for them to change their social status if you start at the bottom.
4. Working Poverty
Today in America, most poor families are still working to make ends meet but still beg government for welfare money to help them but it will never be enough.
5. Hungry Children
Families don't make enough money to feed their kids enough which leads to a phenomenon called "Nursery School Dropouts" This is kids that aren't happy and healthy because they aren't being fed enough and lead short stressful lives.
6. Relocation
A lot of families tend to move to a different area to try to find a better paying job but sometimes end up going hungry and living in their car.
7. Homelessness
This is doesn't necessarily mean living in a cardboard box on the highway. It could mean living out of your car or going from family house to house. Nevertheless, middle class homelessness is on the rise.
8. Debt
A cause of poverty is being in debt. For example, the burden student loans and being in debt is enough to crush someone or their family into poverty.
9. Denied Human Rights
In some parts of the country, people are denied the right to clean drinking water, which no human should have to go through.
10. Child Mortality
Children of poor mothers with less than 12 years of education are 41% more likely to die than a rich family.

ReplyDeleteI agree with the facts that Alyssa presented in her blog. When I was completing my government project about inequality I found that poor people are known to have more long term health problems than wealthier people. This is because poor people are unable to afford healthy all natural foods. It is also because the single mother of three kids doesn't have time to make a homemade meal for her family and instead goes to get fast food. This can lead to obesity and heart problems. Also the stress of being nearly homeless, poor and finding the next family meal can lead to earlier death rates and suicide rates among the poor.It has also been found that poor students have more problems in school because instead of focusing on their studies, they are more focused on working and finding food for themselves and their family.
