"Education is not
the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."
Education
is something most people would define as how many years of schooling they went
through and isn’t that system all about the filling of the pail. Each year it’s
filled a little at a time until it is filled and you graduate to the next level
like one someone moves from high school to say college then to an even more
advanced program. The filling of the pail is the things you learn along the way
to advance yourself to get to a bigger and better “pail”. I suppose that is
like lighting a fire to have the want to reach to the next level of education
but does anyone actually think of it that way? I mean sure there are some
people out there who enjoy sitting at a desk taking notes and test but a
majority probably dread the thought. So what I believe is said to be a lighting
of a fire is in most cases a push to know more knowledge to gain some sort of
edge, the person gaining this education not doing it out of pure enjoyment of
the topic but wanting the privileges the extra knowledge can give them. Wanting
and being guaranteed the job or raise over someone with less education because they
went the extra mile unlike the other who stopped filling their “pail”.
