"There is nothing else than now. There is neither yesterday, certainly, nor is there a tomorrow. How old must you be before you know that? And if you stop complaining and asking for what you will never get, you will have a good life."
You've heard of the quote "Live life in the moment" right? And maybe that is true. Maybe we shouldn't think about what happened yesterday or what is going to happen tomorrow, and maybe that will relive some stress, but is it true that all that will lead to a good life? I don't think so. Everything that happened in the past and that is happening in the present will determine what is going to happen in our future. So Ernest Hemingway says "if you stop complaining and asking for what you will never get, you will have a good life," but if you stop asking for things that you will never get, and stop trying you will never know if you are capable of getting them.
Most people now are doing things to improve their future. All students going to school, are most likely planning what they are going to do after they graduate. Whether it is going to college or going into the army, everything they are doing now is helping them push forward to that goal that they have. We go to school so we can go to college and then get a job and with that job pay for a home and food and maybe have a family one day. You see how it all connects and how the past and present does effect your future. If we just stop wondering about what we will have in our future and stop worrying about it, we may not have the future we want in the end. Like Mrs. Cassidy was saying in class today, if we decided to just drop out of school and go to Florida or somewhere because we want to have fun and only want to think of what is happening now, it may seriously effect our future.
For some reason when I was reading this quote it reminded me of all those movies where people go back in time in time machines. In those movies they go back and time and usually they change one little thing, and when they go back to their present day, everything changed. It just goes to show that even the littlest thing can change your whole future. So we really have to think in the moment but also think of now as a pathway to our future.
