Slumdog Millionaire

          Since we are watching Slumdog Millionaire in class I wanted to look up some information about the film that would be interesting to people that have seen the film or not.  First, the movie grossed more than $375 million dollars.  It was originally produced by Warner Productions, but after they dropped the film Fox Pictures picked it up and released it.  It received 8 Academy Awards out of its 10 nominations in 2009 and was the eighth film in history to win 8 Academy Awards.

          Another interesting fact is that "slumdog" isn't actually a real word - it was just invented by the screenwriter.  Most Indians would not even recognize the word.  Also 20-30% of the movie is in Hindu as most of the children couldn't speak English well enough.  The director, Danny Boyle, lied to future financers of the movie and told them it was an English dialogue so that they would be more likely to invest in it. 

          Another issue of the movie associated with the slums and setting is that Mercedes-Benz contacted Boyle and told him that they didn't want their brand associated with the poverty shown in the film.  They wanted any of their logos or references present in the movie to be removed.

          The fact that I found most interesting is that in the scene in which Jamal jumps down out of the outhouse to get the autograph, he is actually covered in a mixture of peanut butter and chocolate, not actual feces that the movie wants you to believe it is.
