McKinely Nolan

    McKinely Nolan served with the 1st Infantry Division near Saigon during the Vietnam war. However on November 9, 1967, he disappeared supposedly with his Cambodian wife they were just recently married. Much like Kurtz from "Apocalypse Now" he defected from the United States for his own cause, forgetting entirely about the cause that he was there for to begin with. Nolan like Kurtz was never to return from Vietnam. 

     Instead in company of his new wife he joined the opposing side, turning up later in Hanoi. Broadcasting on the radio and writing leaflets that were circulated among American prisoners of war urging them to protest the war. Returning prisoners of war report that they saw him daily with his wife and child and later alongside the Vietnamese fighting against his own nation. Nolan for whatever reason, apparently chose the love of one over love of a nation and remained behind never to return to the United States since. Although he reportedly traveled to Cuba in 1978, which was later confirmed by returning prisoner of war Robert Garwood hearing the information while being held in Vietnam.
