Greek and Roman Mythology Allusions

Although the Golden Age of Classical Greece and Ancient Rome came to an end many centuries ago, its culture continues to influence popular culture today, especially the mythology. From Sirens to monsters to heroes, the beings of Greek and Roman mythology are often alluded to today in movies, music, and literature.
-The Little Mermaid: -mermaids are derived from Sirens, which were said to be beautiful fish-women who lured sailors to their deaths with their mesmerizing singing
                                -Ariel's dad's name is Neptune, the Roman name for the sea god Poseidon
                                -the idea of Ursala was taken from the sea monster Scylla, who guarded the Sea of Monsters, descried as having four eyes and six long necks equipped with grisly heads, each of which contained three rows of sharp teeth. Her body consisted of 12 tentacle-like legs and a cat's tail, while four to six dog-heads ringed her waist. You can see the resemblance to Ursala's many tentacled body

-The Hunger Games: -the entire plot of being stuck in the arena, and the only way out is to kill all others inside is an allusion to the labyrinth and the monster, the Minotaur. The arena is the Labyrinth and each tribute is each others' Minotaur, because, like Theseus having to kill the monster to escape, every tribute's goal is to kill the others so they themselves can get out.
                                   -just like how the Athenians had to send 12 of their strongest males and 12 of their most beautiful females to Crete to sacrifice to the Minotaur, the districts each has to send a male and female tribute to be (most likely) sent to their deaths

-Harry Potter: -in mythology, Hermione was an intelligent girl, a great strategist, and the daughter of Aphrodite, not unlike the clever Hermione Granger, who was sought after by a professional Quidditch player and her best friend.
                    -in the 4th book, the merpeople Harry had to get past at the bottom of the lake were modeled after Sirens. The merpeople, like the Sirens, attempted to impede Harry's journey and goal much like they did Odysseus's
                    -Cerberus, the 3 headed dog who guards the underworld in mythology, is reincarnated as "Fluffy" in Harry Potter, and guards the trapdoor that leads to the philosopher's stone
                    -Sirius is the Dog Star for Greeks, Sirius Black's animagus is a big black dog
                    -Narcissa Malfoy is given the female version of Narcissus, who was so vain that he fell in love with his reflection, wasted away in front of it, and died, because she is so preoccupied with outer looks and keeping her social status (how her family looks to other people is very important to her)
                    -Professor McGonagall, one of the oldest and wisest teachers in the school, has the first name Minerva, the Roman name for Athena, the goddess of wisdom

-Percy Jackson: -the entire thing is based off Greek Mythology, from the plot (gods running around having kids with mortals) to the characters (gods, the kids of gods, the spouses of gods, the affairs of gods, etc.)

These are just a few of the books and movies that contain allusions to Greek and Roman mythology.  The influence of the ancient cultures are found everywhere, from medical terms to literature to movies to advertising to brand names. Despite the amount of time that has passed since the great civilizations, the mythology lives on in our culture, proved especially by the amount of allusions to various myths in well-known books and movies.
