     Between civilian deaths and military casualties, the World War I death toll grew to over 37 million. This led to the war being known as one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. The high death toll was due to the emergence of new war technologies during the outbreak of the war which led to more deaths in a shorter amount of time. World War I technologies revolutionized warfare. These revolutionary weapons include:

•  Rifle: main weapon used by British soldiers in the trenches, able to shoot 15 rounds in one minute and kill someone 1400 meters away.

• Machine gun: needed 4-6 men to work, had to be on a flat surface, had the fire power of 100 guns.

• Chlorine gas: used first by the German army at the battle of Ypres in 1915. Causes a burning sensation in the throat and chest pains (death by suffocation). If the wind was in the wrong direction, it could end up killing their own troops.

• Zeppelin: Used by Germans for bombing raids. Carried machine guns and bombs; abandoned because they were too easy to shoot out of the sky.

  

• Planes: used for the first time to drop bombs, spying, and carried machine guns. Fights between two planes became known as "dogfights."
