Why was Nike named after a greek goddess?

      

    Nike was a goddess who personified victory, also known as the Winged Goddess of Victory. She is seen with wings in most statues and paintings, one of the most famous being the Winged Victory of Samothrace. Most other winged deities in the Greek pantheon had shed their wings by Classical times. Nike is the goddess of strength, speed, and victory. She was a very close acquaintance of Athena ( the goddess of wisdom and military victory) and is thought to have stood in Athena's outstretched hand in the statue of Athena located in the Parthenon. Nike is one of the most commonly portrayed figures on Greek coins.

                             

 



     Nike, being a sports shoe company, would choose a victorious goddess because they want their shoes to assist in the victory of the sport. The check on Nike actually resembles the goddesses wings and body. Nike symbolizes more than just victory but speed and agility, being the symbol of a shoe company is actually quite fitting for the Greek Goddess.
