I think these facts helped create the full affect on the movie. The mission he had to take, what happened on the mission, the death, and the aftermath. War changes a person drastically and sometimes causes soldiers to lose their mind or go into depression.

FORESHADOWING · The film opens with helicopters lurking ominously over the jungle, accompanied by the Doors’ moody song “The End”; Chef and Willard encounter a tiger when they venture off the boat to look for mangoes; Willard murders the Vietnamese peasant woman in the sampan; Lance smears his face with paint like the members of Kurtz’s army.

• The chief was killed by a spear and then he tries to pull Captain Willard into the point which was protruding from his chest.

• The chief was from New Orleans, "Mr.Clean" was from NYC, and Lance was from Southern Carolina.
• Hopper, the quintessential droopy-moustached Seventies hippie, was stoned on marijuana, cocaine, speed or any of the other drugs that were routinely smoked and swallowed by the hundreds of actors, production staff and extras on the set of the classic Vietnam War film, Apocalypse Now.
• Coppola was furious that the star was so spaced-out he couldn't remember his lines. 
• But Hopper had the perfect riposte. He didn't have any lines to remember, he reminded the director, because he hadn't been given any.
