The Vietnam War was a very brutal war that took place between the years 1959-1975. The Vietnam War was the prolonged struggle between nationalist forces attempting to unify the country of Vietnam under a communist government and the United States attempting to prevent the spread of communism. This was during the time of the Red Scare, which was a period of time where there was a rapid spread of communism throughout the world. The United States stepped in world affairs to minimize the world powers from expanding their communist ways. At the beginning of the war, it was France vs. North Vietnam, but as soon as the North Vietnamese looked to China in the north for support, the United States was forced to intervene. In doing so, France backed out of the war almost immediately because they saw no real reason to be there. They made it our problem. Engaged in a war that many viewed as having no way to win, U.S. leaders lost the American public support for the war very quickly. The US people didn't truly see a use in spending money and putting men on the ground for not a definite reason for doing so. Then the draft was enacted, which really made Americans angry. Instead of people voluntarily going over seas, now all men between 18-21 were forced out of there jobs or college campus's to be shipped off. This was a big problem, and the Us then started to realize that maybe we can't win. In 1975, Ford gave the orders to pull out of Vietnam  and the US had officially lost. To this day, the Vietnam War is a bench mark for what not to do during US foreign conflicts.
