Women in War

       During WWII women had to take over the working mans role in society. Most men were away fighting so that left jobs open for women to work. As you can see in this picture, they would work in factories, houses, offices, and other jobs that their husbands left behind. This advertisement, like many others, was geared towards women to get them to join the work field. The War Advertising Council carried out hundreds of publicity campaigns for the government and the war effort.
          Although women took on male dominated trades during World War II, they were expected to return to their everyday housework once men came back from war. These advisements were addressed solely at housewives. This was thought because women who were already employed would move to the higher-paid "essential" jobs on their own. Propaganda was also directed at their husbands, many of whom were unwilling to support such jobs. Later, many women returned to traditional work such as clerical or administration positions, despite their reluctance to re-enter the lower-paying fields. However, some of these women continued working in the factories.
           Rosie was a cultural icon and symbol to women all around America. To this day she is a symbol of feminism and power of women in the economy.
