Potato Eaters is Van Gogh's first painting he made as an artist. At the time of its creation, Van Gogh had only recently started painting and had not yet mastered the techniques that would later make him famous. This could attribute to the interesting look of the piece as well as the overall feeling produced from the painting.
This painting is in no way beautiful. But that is what makes it so unique. Van Gogh painted the emotion in the room of The Potato Eaters which was unique for his time. Many artists only painted beautiful things like meadows self portraits etc., but Van Gogh did not and that is what makes him so special. When I look at this painting I feel that everyone in the room loved each other. for example the women offering a potato to the other women. even though they don't have much they still share their food. it is clear that they are a poverty stricken family based on their dirty clothes and small cramped room. Also potatoes are normally a side dish but not for this family it is their main and only dish.
